Barley belongs to the Poaceae family. Cultivated barleys are distinguished by the number of spikelets remaining on each stem. There is two-row barley (Hordeum distichum); four-row barley (Hordeum tetrastichum); and six-row barley (Hordeum hexastichum).
It grows best in cool, moderately dry climates. Barley requires fewer heat units to reach physiological maturity. It requires a minimum temperature of 6°C to germinate. It flowers at 16°C and ripens at 20°C.
Good yields in well-drained loamy or slightly clayey soils. Very tolerant of calcium and excess salts in the soil.
Adapts to a wide range of values.
