The olive tree belongs to the botanical family Oleaceae and is the only species in this family with edible fruit.
It is one of the oldest traditional crops in the Mediterranean basin, and both its fruits and the oil extracted from them are essential components of the diet. Additionally, olive oil and leaves are widely used in phytotherapy due to their significant therapeutic properties.
The olive tree does not tolerate temperatures below -10ºC and requires the accumulation of warm hours. It is drought-resistant.
It tolerates calcareous soils and is salt-tolerant. It adapts well to a wide range of soils, including those of low fertility, but it is sensitive to prolonged waterlogging.
The ideal soil pH is neutral to slightly alkaline.
The application of organic amendments to the soil is a crucial aspect.
In general, it is recommended to apply stabilized and sanitized organic products to reduce the potential risks associated with using raw organic matter, such as nitrogen immobilization, release of phytotoxic compounds, the presence of pathogenic microorganisms, weed seeds, etc. Additionally, organic amendments and fertilizers should contain heavy metals at levels below the maximum limits established by current regulations.
